Helpful Habits

My autistic 6 yr old and I started this about 2 weeks ago and it’s helped him slow down during his rough days to where he’ll let it out during our time. Might not seem like much but it’s helped wonders with his peer to peer interactions already.

Love it!

My daughter is 6 and has trouble winding down at night. Using this journal to get some thoughts and feelings on paper is incredibly helpful. She sleeps more soundly because of it.

Very happy 10 year old

I gave this to my daughter for her 10th birthday, and ahe is loving it. She stays up filling out the pages happily. I can see it being over the head of a young child who might skip all over and not get the most out of it.

Exactly what my family needed

I got the Know Me if You Can game and two of the journals for my son (7yo). I wanted to let him choose which journal to start with so he would feel more involved and excited to start, and he was definitely excited! He chose me to be his journal buddy (yay!) and he so looks forward to doing the exercises. Sometimes I have to remind him to leave some for the next time! As far as the game goes; we had been struggling with poor sportsmanship and losing gracefully, to the point that family game night was off the table because our son would get so angry at losing that it just wasn’t fun for anyone. He had also been struggling with a lot of negative self thoughts and was starting to lash out negatively in ways that I wanted to redirect. Know Me If You Can has really helped with ALL of these problems. Since there is no point system, we just get to play and have fun and there are no winners or losers, so there are no bad feelings at the end of the night. It’s even allowed us to get back in to some of our other favorite games with better sportsmanship. It’s been so helpful to me, as well, because I too struggle with negativity (wonder where the kid learned it!) and hearing how my family views me (Mommy is DEFINITELY the one most likely to point out something beautiful in nature and make sure we see it too) has helped me see myself in a more positive light. It can be very touching and poignant at times, but there’s plenty of silliness and fun to keep everyone laughing. It’s been so nice learning more about my family and growing closer over this game. I was afraid it wouldn’t go over well (for all his dislike of losing, my son is extremely competitive and will turn EVERYTHING into a win/lose contest, even putting your shoes on) but the second night we had it, my son rushed through his dinner so we could play it right after dinner. Every time we have a free night, the first question out of his mouth is “can we play Know Me Better Man?” We had just watched Muppets Christmas Carol when we got the game and that’s just what he calls it now! It’s a wonderful game, I cannot recommend it enough. Even if you aren’t trying to correct/redirect behavior or dealing with negative self imagery, it’s just a good time with people you love.

Here are the main themes included:

GROWTH MINDSET

Dr. Carol Dweck's research has proven children who develop a growth mindset are more equipped to face challenges. They embrace failures, are eager to try new things, and keep trying until they succeed.

RESILIENCE

Science shows children who express their emotions in a healthy and positive way are more resilient. Resilient children are braver, more curious, and more adaptable.

GRATITUDE

Children who show gratitude are happier, less impulsive, and have better relationships with others. Research shows daily gratitude practice can have a profound impact on your child’s physical and emotional health.

KINDNESS

Children who learn to be kind are happier and more successful. Teaching children kindness also reduces bullying, helps them improve friendships, and increases their well-being.

SELF-LOVE

Teaching children to love themselves helps build their self-esteem and creates the foundation for lifelong success and happiness.

How does the Big Life Journal - Daily Edition differ from the Big Life Journal — Original?

The Big Life Journal — Daily Edition is independent of the Big Life Journal — Original (either the 1st or the 2nd editions). It can be a great next step if your child already completed the original journals (although completing the original journals is not necessary before working on the Daily Edition).

The Daily Edition is designed to be completed by a child on their own every day (it’s totally okay to skip a day or more as the journal is NOT dated).

Is this journal dated?

It’s not dated.

How long will the journal last?

The journal will last three months if completed every day. When finished your child can get another Daily Edition and complete it again since the journal is not dated and it’s very important to keep the daily practice going.

What age range is this journal for?

We recommend this journal for ages 6-11. For older children, we recommend the Big Life Journal - Tween/Teen Edition.
